We re-read the same 22 Collingwood service categories on 17 September, 26 days after the collection behind the Collingwood Review Index 2026. Across the 290 established businesses we could read in both pulls, the town added 144 Google reviews, a rise of 0.9%. Only 82 of those businesses gained a single review. The ten fastest took 128 of the 144. This is the first of a monthly update, and the pattern it shows is the one the annual index argued: growth in this town is concentrated in a handful of businesses.
What changed between 22 August and 17 September
| 22 August | 17 September | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Businesses tracked in both pulls | 290 | 290 | fixed panel |
| Google reviews held by the panel | 15,953 | 16,097 | +144 (+0.9%) |
| Businesses that added at least one | 82 | 28% of the panel | |
| Businesses that added nothing | 195 | 67% | |
| Businesses whose count fell | 13 | 4% | |
| Typical gain among those that moved | +2 | median |
The panel is fixed on purpose. It holds only businesses we could read in both sweeps, matched on their Google place ID, with the same locality and category rules applied to each month. Businesses that appeared in one pull and not the other are counted as neither growth nor loss, because a listing moving in or out of the results is a change in what Google returned, not a change in the business.
Why review counts fall as well as rise
Thirteen businesses show a lower count in September than in August. Google removes reviews it judges to breach its policies, reviewers delete their own, and profiles occasionally get merged. A count that slips by one or two is normal background. A count that drops by a third is worth an afternoon of your attention.
The ten fastest took 89 percent of the growth
| Business | Rating | 22 Aug | 17 Sep | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horizon Property Management | 4.9 | 117 | 137 | +20 |
| Affordable Comfort | 5.0 | 1,083 | 1,102 | +19 |
| Mr. Lube + Tires | 4.9 | 625 | 641 | +16 |
| Eager Beaver Services | 4.9 | 412 | 424 | +12 |
| Revive Car Wash | 4.7 | 130 | 142 | +12 |
| Stellar Tech Repair | 4.9 | 542 | 553 | +11 |
| Modern PURAIR Collingwood | 5.0 | 22 | 32 | +10 |
| Mariner Computer Sales & Service | 5.0 | 227 | 237 | +10 |
| Current Plumbing & Heating & Cooling | 5.0 | 372 | 382 | +10 |
| BO Expert Stucco | 5.0 | 8 | 16 | +8 |
Two things in that table are worth sitting with. The first is that the businesses already holding the largest counts are still the ones adding. Affordable Comfort passed 1,100 reviews this month. It did not slow down at 800, and it has not slowed down at 1,000. The second is that Modern PURAIR added ten reviews from a base of 22, and that is the entry every reader of this page can copy. Ten reviews is a month of asking, not a budget.
What a two-review month actually buys you
The median business that moved at all added two reviews. The town median sits at 15. A business asking properly and landing four a month clears that median inside four months, and clears the 25-review mark most Collingwood categories treat as respectable inside six. Against a town where 67% of businesses added nothing in 26 days, a steady four a month is not an ambitious target. It is the whole competition.
One listing went from zero to 65 reviews in 26 days
The largest single movement in Collingwood this month was not on the table above, and it is the reason the table has an entry rule.
A plumbing listing that showed zero reviews on 22 August showed 65 reviews and a 5.0 rating on 17 September. On the August pull it sat eighth in the plumber results. On the September pull it was first, ahead of every established plumber in town, and it also surfaced in appliance repair, electricians and HVAC. Its phone number carries a Toronto area code and its website is a page inside a shared domain rather than a site of its own.
We are not going to guess how a listing gathers 65 reviews from a standing start in under a month. What matters for anyone running a service business here is what the map did about it: nothing. Google Maps reads review volume and recency as signals of a live, chosen business, and it acted on both within four weeks. The fastest established business in town added 20 in the same window.
Our monthly panel excludes any listing that held zero reviews in the earlier pull, so a standing start never counts as growth. The listing stays in the town-wide totals, because it passes every locality and category rule we apply. Both of those are rules in code, not judgements made while writing.
What to do with this if you run a business here
Ask after every finished job, in the same sentence you use to confirm the work is done. Four a month puts you past two thirds of the town inside a single quarter.
Check your own count against your category median before you spend anything on visibility. If you are under 15 reviews in Collingwood, reviews are the cheapest ranking work available to you, and our free reputation scan puts your number against your category median and the leader in about a minute.
If your count fell this month, open your profile and read the recent reviews rather than assuming Google made a mistake. If it fell by more than a few, that is worth a closer look at whether your recent review sources are patterns Google penalises.
If you want the fuller picture behind these numbers, the Collingwood Review Index 2026 covers the concentration, the category leaders and the wide open trades, and how many Google reviews it takes to rank in Collingwood covers the thresholds by trade. For the local search picture around the reviews, start with the Collingwood local SEO playbook or the Collingwood area page.
How this is measured, and what it is not
The September pull ran the same 22 categories from the same map centre as the August collection, three pages deep per category, through the same search API we use for client work. Every listing is filtered by the locality rules published with the annual index: an addressed listing must carry a Collingwood address, an addressless listing must answer on an Ontario or toll free number, and retail counters, dealership service desks and listings that are not providers in their category are dropped.
One number from this month deserves a warning rather than a headline. The September pull found 398 Collingwood businesses holding 22,450 reviews, against 348 and 18,396 in August. That is not 22% growth in a month. Google Maps returns a different depth of results for the same query from one pull to the next, so a deeper return finds more businesses without a single new review being written. Totals from two different sweeps are not comparable, which is exactly why the panel exists and why the headline on this page is +144 and not +4,054.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just compare the two totals? Because the totals measure our collection as much as the town. The same query, from the same centre, on the same settings, returned 1,143 rows in August and 965 in September. The businesses matched across both pulls are the only ones where a change in review count means a change in the world.
What counts as a Collingwood business here? A listing that publishes an address must show a Collingwood address. A listing with no address is kept, because service area businesses are the normal model in the trades, but it must answer on an Ontario or toll free number. Dealership service desks, retail counters and listings that are not providers in their category are dropped. The rules run at collection time and they are the same rules that produced the annual index.
How many reviews a month should I be getting? Four is the number we give clients, and this month’s data is the argument for it. The median business that moved at all added two, and two thirds of the town added none. Four a month is enough to pass the town median inside a quarter from a standing start of nothing.
Will you publish this every month? Yes. Same categories, same centre, same depth, same rules, on or around the middle of each month, with the annual edition continuing to carry the deep analysis each July. The month to month numbers are the trendline the annual index was built to start.
