The Collingwood Review Index 2026: what 24,675 Google reviews say about local service businesses

We analyzed 349 service businesses and 24,675 Google reviews across 22 categories in Collingwood local search. The medians, the leaders, and what it takes to be #1.

By Lasse Pettersen ·

The Collingwood Review Index is our annual study of every service business we can find competing in Collingwood local search: 349 unique businesses across 22 categories, holding 24,675 Google reviews between them as of July 2026. The headline findings: the median Collingwood service business has just 23 reviews, the top 10% of businesses hold 58% of all the reviews in town, and in most trades the category leader has 10 to 60 times the reviews of the typical competitor.

This is the first edition. We will re-run it every year with the same method so the numbers become a trendline.

How we built the index

In early July 2026 we pulled Google Maps results for 22 service categories as a Collingwood searcher sees them, from appliance repair and plumbing through dog grooming and phone repair. For each business we recorded its review count, average rating, and position. Businesses appearing in more than one category (a company doing both HVAC and plumbing, for example) are counted once in the town-wide totals.

Two curation rules apply to the named leaderboards below. First, they list service providers, so retail counters (a pet store that also grooms, a paint store, a hardware store that installs doors), storage facilities appearing in mover results, and out-of-area listings that bleed into Collingwood results are excluded from named spots, though they remain in the aggregate statistics. Second, the index only names businesses that are winning. Below-median numbers stay anonymous and aggregated. If you want to know where your own business sits, ask us, not the leaderboard.

The town-wide numbers

  • 349 unique service businesses found across 22 categories
  • 24,675 total Google reviews between them
  • 23 reviews for the median business, against a mean of 76 (a few giants pull the average up)
  • 4.9 median rating
  • 30% of businesses have fewer than 10 reviews, and just over half have fewer than 25
  • 18% have crossed 100 reviews
  • The top 10% of businesses (32 of them) hold 14,429 reviews, 58% of the entire town’s total

That last number is the story of the whole index. Reviews in Collingwood are not spread around. They concentrate hard on a small group of businesses that ask consistently, and the rest of the market shares what is left.

Grouped bar chart: 30% of Collingwood businesses have under 10 reviews but hold only 2% of all reviews, while the 8% of businesses with 250 or more reviews hold 53% of the town's 24,675 Google reviews.

The 1,000 club

Four businesses in the index have crossed one thousand Google reviews:

Canadoor Garage DoorsGarage doors1,7974.9
Canadian Tire (auto centre)Automotive1,1644.1
Affordable ComfortHVAC, plumbing, electrical1,0515.0
Nottawasaga MechanicalHVAC, plumbing1,0284.8

Affordable Comfort’s number deserves a second look: 1,051 reviews at a perfect 5.0 average is one of the strongest review profiles we have seen anywhere in Ontario, let alone in a town of 25,000.

The most reviewed business in each category

Current category leaders, with the category median for scale. Where the raw #1 was a retail store or an out-of-area listing, the table shows the leading dedicated service provider instead (see method above).

Notes on the table. The plumbing specialist story belongs to Current Plumbing, at 352 reviews with a 5.0 average, the largest single-trade plumbing profile in town behind the two multi-trade giants. Ainger Group appears twice because its roofing and snow operations lead two different categories; across its listings the group holds over 1,100 reviews. Two categories are omitted from named rankings: appliance repair and oil change, where Maps results are dominated by multi-trade listings and national chains rather than dedicated local providers. Locksmiths had the smallest sample in the study (five businesses), so treat that row as directional.

Who is actually adding reviews right now

Totals reward longevity. To see who is earning reviews today, we pulled the most recent reviews for every named leader in this index in mid-July and counted the last 90 days. The fastest movers:

Bar chart of Google reviews added in 90 days by Collingwood's named category leaders, from 15 for On The Bay Painting to 77 or more for Canadoor Garage Doors, with a reference line at 23, the median Collingwood business's lifetime review total, which the top five all clear.

Three things jump out of this table.

First, each of the five fastest businesses added more reviews in the past 90 days than the median Collingwood business has collected in its lifetime (23). The concentration at the top of this index is not history, it is happening at a rate of 20+ reviews a month, right now.

Second, the standout relative mover is Current Plumbing: 67 new reviews on a base of 352 is roughly 19% growth in a single quarter, the fastest pace-to-size ratio of any large profile in town.

Third, between them the named leaders added roughly 590 reviews in 90 days. Leaders not shown added fewer than 15 in the window, which in several cases is simply seasonality (a snow removal operation in July is supposed to be quiet), so read absence from this table as “not currently sprinting”, not as decline.

Ratings are maxed out. Counts are not.

Here is the finding that should change how Collingwood businesses think about reviews: 82% of businesses in the index are rated 4.5 or higher, and 48% hold a perfect 5.0.

Waffle chart of 100 squares, one per 1% of the 349 businesses in the index: 48% hold a perfect 5.0 Google rating, 34% sit between 4.5 and 4.9, and 18% are rated below 4.5.

When half the town has five stars, your rating cannot differentiate you. A searcher comparing three 5.0-rated painters picks the one with 75 reviews over the ones with 9, because volume is the only visible difference. This matches what we found in our 2026 local SEO statistics roundup: consumers trust recency and volume, and Google’s Map Pack rewards the same two things. The competition in Collingwood is not for a better rating. It is for more, and more recent, reviews at the rating you already have.

The wide-open categories

The gap table cuts both ways. In garage doors or HVAC, the leader is effectively uncatchable this year. But several categories have no runaway winner:

  • Handyman services: the busiest listing in the entire category has about 20 reviews. Any handyman collecting two reviews a month would lead the town within a year.
  • Locksmiths: the leader sits at 57, and the median is 10.
  • Painting: the top dedicated painting contractor has 75 reviews. A dozen painters in town are within striking distance of the top three.
  • Junk removal, movers, tree services: leaders in the 75 to 111 range, with medians in the twenties and thirties.

Dumbbell chart comparing the category median to the current leader in five winnable Collingwood trades: tree service 24 to 111, movers 38 to 109, painting 14 to 75, junk removal 22 to 75, and locksmiths 10 to 57.

If you operate in one of these categories, the Map Pack in your trade is still up for grabs. Our guide to how many reviews you need to rank in Collingwood walks through setting your exact target; this index is the dataset behind its benchmarks.

What this means if you run a service business here

Three practical takeaways from the 2026 data:

  1. The median is beatable almost everywhere. Half of Collingwood’s service businesses have fewer than 25 reviews. A simple, consistent ask after every completed job (the boring thing almost nobody does) moves you past the median inside a season. That is exactly the machine our done-for-you review service runs.
  2. Velocity decides the middle of the table. The difference between 30 reviews and 90 reviews is rarely business quality. It is whether asking is systematic or occasional. Google notices the rate, not just the total.
  3. The leaders never stop. Canadoor did not stop at 500. Affordable Comfort did not stop at 800. The velocity table above shows both still adding roughly 26 a month today. Concentration happens because the businesses at the top keep asking after they have “enough”, which is why 10% of the town holds 58% of the reviews.

And one takeaway for the AI-search era: assistants like ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers lean heavily on review counts and ratings when they recommend a local business. The same concentration you see in this index is starting to replicate inside AI recommendations. The businesses building review volume now are buying visibility in both channels at once, a theme we cover across the Collingwood local SEO playbook. We have since measured that second channel directly: the Canada AI Visibility Index found that in 40% of 368 Canadian local markets, the Google review leader was never mentioned by a single AI assistant.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Collingwood Review Index data come from? From Google Maps results for 22 service categories in Collingwood, collected in early July 2026 via the same search API we use for client work. We recorded review count, average rating, and result position for every business returned, then de-duplicated businesses appearing in multiple categories. The 90-day velocity figures were collected in mid-July by pulling each named leader’s reviews newest-first and counting those inside the window; a plus sign means “at least”, where a profile was adding reviews faster than our collection cap. It is a snapshot of public Google data, not private information.

My business is not on the leaderboard. Can I get added? The leaderboard is not a paid listing, it simply reports the most reviewed provider per category at collection time. The way on is more reviews. The next edition runs in July 2027, and a business adding 4 to 6 reviews a month between now and then would crack the top three in several of the categories above.

Should I work on my rating or my review count? For most Collingwood businesses, count. With 82% of the town rated 4.5+ and nearly half at a perfect 5.0, ratings are saturated. Unless you are below 4.5, every hour spent on reputation is better spent generating new reviews than polishing the average.

Why are some well-known businesses missing from the category tables? Named leaderboard spots go to dedicated local service providers. Retail stores with service counters, storage facilities that surface in mover searches, and listings based well outside the Collingwood market are excluded from named spots but still counted in the town-wide statistics. Categories where Maps results were mostly chains or multi-trade overlap (appliance repair, oil change) report no named leader this year.

Will the index cover other Georgian Bay towns? Yes. Collingwood is the first edition because it is home. Wasaga Beach, Blue Mountains, and Owen Sound editions are planned, and we already maintain the underlying data for outreach and client benchmarking.
