The single biggest ranking lever inside the Google Map Pack is your primary GBP category. Not reviews, not citations, not schema. The primary category is the field Google leans on hardest to decide whether you are even eligible to rank for a given query. Pick the wrong one and the rest of your work compounds at half rate. Below is the right primary and the right secondaries for the six trades we work with most across Collingwood and the Georgian Bay shoreline, plus the categories to avoid because they look right and aren’t.
Why category choice is non-negotiable
GBP categories are a closed vocabulary, around 4,000 entries that Google maintains globally. You cannot type your own. The primary category is a single category. Secondary categories let you list up to 9 more. The primary carries roughly 70% of the categorical relevance signal in our testing; secondaries cover the rest.
A Collingwood plumber listed primary as “Contractor” loses to a Collingwood plumber listed primary as “Plumber” for the query “plumber collingwood”, even with worse reviews, worse photos, and a younger profile. We have watched this exact reordering happen inside 3 to 6 weeks after fixing nothing else but the primary category.
So before you touch reviews or citations or anything else, get the category right.
Plumbers
Primary: Plumber
Secondaries to add (pick 2-4 that match what you actually do):
Drainage service(drain cleaning, snake jobs)Hot water system supplier(water heater installs)Bathroom remodeler(full bath renos)Septic system service(rural Meaford, Thornbury, Owen Sound)Gasfitter(you hold the licence)Water filter supplier(whole-home filtration installs)
Do not use as primary:
Contractor, too broad, loses to specialist plumbersHeating contractor, confuses GBP about your service mix (use HVAC primary if heating is actually your dominant work)Construction company, even broader, hurts visibility for “plumber near me”
For Collingwood plumbers specifically, our Collingwood plumber SEO playbook covers the citation strategy that compounds on top of correct category selection.
HVAC contractors
Primary: HVAC contractor
Secondaries:
Heating contractorAir conditioning contractorFurnace repair serviceAir conditioning repair serviceHeat pump installer(growing fast in this market post-2025 rebates)Air duct cleaning service(if you actually offer it)Plumber(only if you genuinely do plumbing jobs; otherwise leave it out)
Do not use as primary:
Mechanical contractor, too generic for residential Map PackHeating equipment supplier, supplier category, you’ll show up in the wrong searchesPlumber, even if you do both, HVAC primary outperforms in this corridor
For more on the Collingwood HVAC market specifically (furnace replacement, AC installs, the heat pump rebate wave), see the HVAC SEO playbook.
Roofers
Primary: Roofing contractor
Secondaries:
Roofing supply store(only if you actually retail materials)Gutter cleaning serviceMetal roofing supplier(only if you actually do metal roofs, which is a growing premium niche on Blue Mountain chalets)Insulation contractor(if you also do attic insulation)Construction company(acceptable as secondary)
Do not use as primary:
Construction company, far too broadContractor, same issue, kills your “roofer collingwood” relevanceGeneral contractor, hurts for the same reason
Roofing is one of the higher-ticket Collingwood trades. SEO for Collingwood roofers goes deeper into the $20k+ re-roof job acquisition strategy.
Electricians
Primary: Electrician
Secondaries:
Electrical installation serviceLighting contractor(residential + commercial lighting projects)Solar energy contractor(PV install is a growing niche in this corridor)Generator shop(Generac dealers especially)Security system installer(only if you actually install)Electric vehicle charging station contractor(huge growth category 2025-2026, especially in Blue Mountain chalets and Collingwood new builds)
Do not use as primary:
Electrical engineer, different category entirely; Google will surface you for the wrong searchesContractor, too broadElectronic store, incorrect
The EV charger install category specifically is one of the easiest near-term wins for Collingwood electricians. SEO for Collingwood electricians covers it in detail.
Contractors and renovators
Primary: General contractor
This is the one category where “General contractor” is correct as primary, because it is the most specific category Google offers for full-scope renovation work.
Secondaries:
Kitchen remodelerBathroom remodelerHome builder(only if you actually do new-build, not just renos)Custom home builderConstruction company(acceptable as secondary)Deck builder(if you do exterior work)Sunroom contractorConcrete contractor(only if you self-perform)
Do not use as primary:
Construction company, slightly broader than General contractor, and Map Pack relevance for “contractor collingwood” is weakerCarpenter, too narrow for full-scope renovation work
Renovation contractors in this corridor compete heavily for the $50k+ kitchen and bathroom jobs. SEO for Collingwood contractors covers the cottage market angle most agencies miss.
Landscapers
Primary: Landscaper
Secondaries:
Lawn care serviceSnow removal service(essential for year-round revenue in this market)Garden center(only if you actually retail plants)Tree service(only if you self-perform; arborist work is a separate licence)Irrigation equipment supplierHardscaping contractor(patio, walkway, retaining wall)Excavating contractor(if you have the equipment)
Do not use as primary:
Gardener, narrower, weaker for commercial maintenance workLandscape designer, design-focused, weaker for maintenance contract relevanceContractor, too broad
The snow-removal secondary specifically is what unlocks November-March cashflow for Collingwood landscapers. Landscaper SEO playbook explains the seasonal calendar.
How to actually change your primary category (without triggering a re-review)
GBP treats primary-category changes as significant edits, especially if your profile has any prior suspension history. The safe sequence:
- Inside GBP web interface: Edit profile → Business category → Change.
- Save once. Do not edit other fields in the same session, hours, name, photos, anything. Save only the category change.
- Wait 7 days. During this window Google sometimes pings you for re-verification (rare but happens). Do not panic if it does; the postcard or video re-verification gets handled in 5 days.
- After the 7-day window, return and add secondary categories one at a time, two days apart. Yes, this feels slow. Rapid edits trigger profile review.
- Track rank. Use a grid-based local rank tracker (we use Local Falcon) to see the before-and-after across your full service area, not just from your kitchen table.
Most Collingwood profiles we audit have rapidly changed too many fields at once at some point in their history. Going back to careful one-edit-at-a-time discipline rebuilds Google’s trust in the profile.
A note on “search by category” mode
GBP categories matter even more in 2026 because Google has rolled out “search by category” as a default discovery surface on mobile. When a user taps the Maps app and selects “Plumbers”, Google does not return businesses whose primary category is Contractor. It returns businesses whose primary category is Plumber (or whose Plumber is a secondary, but ranked beneath every business with Plumber as primary). This is the under-appreciated reason category discipline is more important than it was even 18 months ago.
The fastest audit you can do tonight
- Open your GBP. Note your current primary and secondaries.
- Open three of your top Map Pack competitors. Note theirs.
- Look for the pattern. If they share a primary category and you do not, that is your fix.
- Make the single change. Wait two weeks. Re-check rank.
If that single category change moved you, the rest of the playbook covered in our Collingwood SEO guide is the next 6 months of work. If it did not move you, the bottleneck is somewhere else, usually reviews, citations, or the website itself. See why your Collingwood business isn’t showing up on Google Maps for the full diagnostic checklist.
FAQ
Can I list multiple primary categories? No. GBP allows exactly one primary. Up to 9 secondaries are allowed.
What happens if Google removes the category I picked? Google periodically retires categories. If yours is retired, GBP picks the closest replacement automatically and notifies you. Worth checking your profile once a quarter to catch this.
Does my category affect what services I can list? Yes. The “Services” field is populated from your selected categories. If you cannot find a service to add, your category set is too narrow.
Should I match my biggest competitor’s category exactly? Usually yes, with one exception: if your competitor is misranked because they picked the wrong category, copying them perpetuates the same problem. Cross-check against the trade-specific primaries above before mirroring anyone.
