Local SEO

What results should local SEO deliver, and by when?

Local SEO should bring more calls and direction requests, a better Map Pack spot in your towns, and steady reviews. What to expect, when, and how to check it.

By Lasse Pettersen ·

Local SEO should deliver three things you can count: more phone calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile, a higher Map Pack position for the searches that bring you jobs in the towns you serve, and a steady run of new reviews. Profile results typically show in 4 to 8 weeks. Organic rankings for your service pages take 3 to 6 months. Nobody can promise you a position, because Google’s own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.

That is the short answer, and those are the numbers our own retainers report each month. The rest of this post is for the owner who wants to hold any provider to it, including us: which numbers count as a result, which ones only look like one, what a fair month-by-month timeline looks like, and what one real account showed when we measured it honestly.

The results worth paying for

Rank every number on a report by how close it sits to a booked job. The closer it sits, the more it counts as a result. A roofer in Collingwood does not get paid for impressions. The roofer gets paid when a homeowner in Craigleith calls about a leak, and that call is the thing local SEO exists to produce.

Results Google counts for you

The top three rows are counted by Google, not by your agency. That matters. You can open the profile on your phone between jobs and read the calls and direction requests yourself, so no report can dress them up. For a walk-in business, such as a laundromat or a garden centre in Wasaga Beach, a direction request is about as close to a sale as a search result gets.

Results you need tracking for

Website calls and form fills only count if something records them. A tracked phone number, a click-to-call event and a form event are the minimum. Without them, a provider can tell you the site is working and you have no way to disagree. If the first report carries no website call count, ask why before you ask about anything else.

Local SEO results for a business with no storefront

A plumber, an electrician or a cleaning company that drives to the customer gets few direction requests, and that is normal. For a service-area business, weight the calls row and the Map Pack row much higher, and read direction requests as a minor signal at most.

A fair timeline, month by month

Results tend to arrive in the same order, because each surface Google reads takes a different time to change. Our local SEO blueprint for a Georgian Bay trade sets out the order the work runs in. This is the order the results arrive in.

The first 30 days: work you can see, not results

In the first 30 days, the profile fixes and the citation audit go first, because that is the fastest surface to move. Expect a written list of what changed and almost nothing on the call count yet. A provider who shows you a big jump before any work is done is showing you seasonality or luck, not their work. What you should see in month one is proof of work: the profile edits, the corrected listings, the tracking that now fires.

Weeks 4 to 8: the profile moves first

Calls, direction requests and Map Pack position are the first results to move, usually inside 4 to 8 weeks, because they sit on the profile and the profile is the fastest surface to move. Compare each figure against the same month last year, not only against last month, or a busy summer in Blue Mountain will pass for a result.

Months 3 to 6: the website catches up

Organic rankings for service pages take 3 to 6 months, and a new website takes longer than an established one. New town pages and service pages need time to be crawled, indexed and trusted before they rank. Website calls follow the rankings, so they arrive last.

What results to expect from local SEO in a smaller town

Google weighs prominence, which includes how many reviews you have and how many websites link to you. In our judgment, a town with fewer complete competing profiles, such as Thornbury or Meaford, gives a smaller gap to close than a competitive Collingwood search. The order of results stays the same. Only the size of the gap changes.

One real account: what moved and what did not

The accounts on our local SEO case studies page are the ones we have written up with the numbers left in; the fullest is the laundromat profile case study. It is worth reading for the split it shows, not only the headline.

Profile calls rose within the first full month. The organic position improved by almost two places, and organic clicks stayed flat. That is the timeline above, playing out on one real account. It also shows the trap in a report that leads with position: on position alone, the website looked like a win. On clicks, it had not paid anything yet.

That is the standard to apply to your own report. A result is a number that moved and also moved the phone. A position that rises while calls and clicks stay flat is progress on the way to a result, and an honest report says so.

Signs the work is not delivering

None of these signs proves a provider is failing. Each one is a reason to ask a direct question.

A report that leads with impressions

Impressions, keyword counts and “positions improved” charts can all rise in a month when your phone rang less. If those are the first numbers on the page and calls are missing or buried, ask for the call count and the direction requests from your own profile.

No baseline from before the work started

A result needs a before. If nobody recorded your calls, direction requests and Map Pack positions before the work began, no later number can prove anything. Pull those figures yourself on day one, from your own profile, and keep a copy.

A promise of a position

Google’s own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and that you should find someone else if a provider guarantees first place. A firm promise of a position is a sales line, not a result.

How to set the bar before you sign

Write down the before numbers, then agree in writing which numbers the report will carry each month and where each one comes from. Ask for each month’s plan in writing as well, so you can check the work even in the weeks when the results have not moved yet.

Our own terms are on the local SEO pricing for Ontario page: no rank guarantee, and a proof-of-work guarantee on the Foundation, Multi-town and Trades Premium retainers, so if a written item is not done and shown to you by month end, that month is free. For what we change on the profile month to month, see our Google Business Profile management page. If you want the before numbers taken for you, a free local SEO audit of your own listing shows where you sit in the Map Pack today and who sits above you.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should local SEO show results?

Profile results, which means calls, direction requests and Map Pack position, typically show in 4 to 8 weeks. Organic rankings for service pages take 3 to 6 months. The first month mostly shows work done, not results.

Is a higher ranking a result?

Only once it moves the phone. A better position with flat calls and flat clicks is progress, not yet a result. Read the position next to the call count every month.

Does local SEO come with a guarantee of results?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and its own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. A provider can guarantee its own work, in writing, and you can check that.

What if calls have not moved after a full quarter?

Check the tracking first, then the baseline. If both are sound and the profile work was done, ask what the plan changes next month and why. A month-to-month retainer means you do not have to wait out a contract to get an answer.
