Meta drops ad set placement choices from Leads campaigns

Meta Leads and Sales ad sets can no longer drop placements. Four exclusions move to account settings. What a Collingwood trade running lead ads checks.

By Lasse Pettersen ·

Meta is removing the option to pick or drop placements inside an ad set for campaigns built on the Leads, Sales, Engagement and App promotion objectives. Awareness and Traffic campaigns keep it. If you run Facebook lead ads and switched off Audience Network or Marketplace in the ad set, that switch is going away. The replacement is an account-level exclusion, set once per objective, and it covers four placements only.

What actually changed

Meta’s help page on what’s new in placement settings lists the four affected objectives and says: “For these objectives, you no longer choose placements manually at the ad set level.” The same page says the change is “being rolled out gradually and may not be available to you yet”. It carries no date.

Practitioners saw it first. Jon Loomer published screenshots of the notice in the Placements section on August 20, 2026, and at that time it read as a test. Social Media Today reported Meta’s written guidance on October 12. On October 27, Loomer read the documentation again and corrected one point: the objective decides, not the performance goal. A Leads campaign that optimises for link clicks loses the control. A Traffic campaign with the same goal keeps it.

Meta names three tools in place of the ad set switch:

  • Creative per placement. Upload different images or video for each placement when you build the ad.
  • Placement value rules. Bid up or down on a placement. This changes the price, and it does not block the placement.
  • Account controls by objective. A new option lets you exclude placements for one objective, for example Leads, without touching your other campaigns.

The account controls page lists what you can exclude: Audience Network native, banner and interstitial; Audience Network rewarded videos; Facebook Marketplace; and the Facebook right column. Reels, Stories, Messenger and the Instagram feeds have no exclusion at account level.

What this means for Georgian Bay businesses

This reaches the owner who runs their own Meta lead ads: a Wasaga Beach landscaper with an instant form for spring cleanups, or a Collingwood roofer who runs a quote form after a storm. It also reaches the agency that runs the account for them. A boosted post on the Engagement objective is affected too. A campaign on Awareness or Traffic is not.

The common reason a small advertiser drops placements is lead quality. Many account managers turn off Audience Network on a lead form campaign because they believe it brings accidental taps and fake names. We have not measured lead quality by placement in a Georgian Bay account, so we do not claim it as fact.

Meta’s page does not say what happens to an ad set that already has placements turned off. Meta also gives no date for your account. We cannot tell you whether your current settings still apply. Check your own account.

What to do

  1. Open each Leads or Sales ad set and look at the Placements section. If Meta shows a notice there, the change has reached your account.
  2. If you had placements turned off on purpose, go to Advertising settings, then Placement controls, turn on “My business can only advertise on specific placements”, and untick the placements you want to exclude. Meta says controls set there “will be applied to all existing campaigns in your ad account”, so choose the objective-level option if it shows for you.
  3. Check the placement breakdown before you exclude anything. In Ads Manager, break results down by placement and compare cost per lead and the leads you actually booked. Exclude a placement only when your own numbers show a problem.
  4. Do not change your budget or bid strategy because of this. Meta says Advantage+ placements gave a 10% lower cost per result in an experiment it has not published. That is Meta’s claim about its own product, and it is not a reason to spend more.

If Meta ads are a small part of how you get jobs, this is a ten-minute check. Frequently asked questions

Does this change apply to Canadian ad accounts? Meta’s help page does not limit it to a country, and it says the rollout is gradual. Expect it in a Canadian account, and confirm by opening an ad set in yours.

Can I still block Audience Network on my lead ads? Yes, at account level. Audience Network is one of the four placements Meta lists under account controls. The setting moves out of the ad set and into Advertising settings.

Is there a way around it with a Traffic campaign? A Traffic campaign keeps manual placements. But Traffic optimises for clicks to a page, not for form submissions, so it is a different campaign and not a fix for lead ads. We do not recommend switching objective only to get the control back.

Will my existing ad sets lose their placement settings? Meta does not say. Check each ad set after the notice appears.
