The right Google Ads agency for a trade depends on one thing above all: whether you want paid search run on its own, or run alongside the local search work that eventually replaces it. For a plumber, HVAC contractor, roofer or electrician serving a handful of Ontario towns, the second is usually the better economics, because ads that never get cheaper are a rent you pay forever. For a business that already ranks and simply wants paid search run properly and at scale, a dedicated PPC specialist will out-execute a generalist every time. Below are five real options matched to how you operate, and the five questions that tell you more than any list will.
How we chose
This is not a ranking of quality one to five. It mixes two kinds of firm, a local search specialist and established Ontario paid-search agencies, because trades are not all the same and the right answer changes with the size and shape of the business. Every agency here is real and currently operating, and each description reflects how the firm positions itself publicly, checked in August 2026. Where a firm is a poor fit for trades we have left it out rather than described it unkindly, which is why some well-known Canadian names are absent.
The five questions that matter more than the list
Ask every agency you speak to. The answers separate them faster than any roundup.
1. Who owns the ad account? The correct answer is you. Some agencies build campaigns inside an account you cannot access, so leaving means starting from zero with no history. Ask to be the owner, with the agency added as a manager.
2. How will you verify my conversion tracking before changing anything? If the answer is vague, walk. Broken tracking is the normal state of a local ad account, not the exception, and every optimisation made on top of it is guesswork. On one account we took over, Google Ads was the largest channel on the site at 428 paid sessions in 90 days with no conversions recorded at all, because a phone call event had quietly stopped firing after a site update. The full account is in our profile and website case study.
3. Is my targeting set to presence or to interest? Google’s location setting defaults to including people who show interest in your area rather than people in it. For a business that drives 40 minutes, that quietly buys clicks from cities it will never serve.
4. What happens to my call tracking numbers? Call tracking is useful and it is also the fastest way to break the name, address and phone consistency your Map Pack ranking depends on. The right answer is tracking numbers on ad traffic only, real number everywhere Google reads it for local ranking. See NAP consistency for trades.
5. Should I be running Local Services Ads instead? An agency that never raises this is either not paying attention or is steering you to the product it prefers to bill. For eligible trades LSAs sit above both the paid ads and the Map Pack and bill per lead, which is a different decision entirely. We set the comparison out in Local Services Ads or Google Ads.
1. Georgian Bay SEO. Best for a local trade that wants ads and local search run together
We work only on local search for trades and service businesses along the Georgian Bay shoreline, and Google Ads is part of that work rather than the whole of it. The argument for this shape is straightforward: ads buy the phone ringing this week, local search stops you paying for it in year three, and running them separately means nobody is reducing the ad spend as the organic position improves.
Be clear about the limitation, because it decides whether we belong on your shortlist. We do not sell Google Ads management on its own. Campaign management is included in Trades Premium at $2,500 a month and in Custom engagements, layered on top of the SEO work, with ad spend paid directly to Google. If you want paid search managed and nothing else, one of the four specialists below is the better call and we will tell you so on the phone.
The right fit is a trade serving a defined set of Ontario towns that wants the two channels run by the same person, with reporting in booked jobs rather than impressions. Method is at Google Ads management, pricing is published at pricing, and the free 15-minute audit includes a check of your ad account with no sales call attached.

2. Page Zero Media. Best for depth in paid search alone
Page Zero describes itself as the original Toronto PPC agency, and paid search is the core of what it does rather than one service among many. For a trade that already ranks locally, already has a site that converts, and simply wants paid search run with real depth, a specialist that has done nothing else for a long time is a strong answer.
Best fit: an established Ontario trade or multi-branch operator that wants paid search treated as its own discipline rather than bundled into a general marketing retainer.
3. Consultus Digital. Best for a trade wanting broader performance marketing
Consultus Digital is a Toronto performance marketing agency working across paid channels rather than search alone. For a trade that wants paid search sitting inside a wider performance programme, with the same team handling more than one channel, that breadth is the point.
Best fit: a growing Ontario trade or home-service business with a budget large enough to run several paid channels at once and a preference for one team across all of them.
4. Search Engine People. Best established Canadian agency for a larger operator
Search Engine People is a long-established Toronto agency working across Canada and North America, with a mature bench across search. Longevity matters more than it sounds in this industry: an agency that has run accounts through several Google platform changes has seen the failure modes.
Best fit: a larger contractor or multi-location operator competing in crowded urban markets, where the lift is heavier than a single Georgian Bay town requires.
5. Major Tom. Best for a bigger brand that wants strategy first
Major Tom operates across Vancouver, Toronto and New York and positions itself as strategy-first, marrying planning with execution. That is the right emphasis when the question is not “how do we run these campaigns” but “what should we be spending on at all”.
Best fit: a scaled home-service brand or franchise group where the paid search decision sits inside a larger commercial strategy, rather than a single-truck operator who needs the phone to ring next week.
What this list cannot tell you
Any roundup, this one included, is a starting point rather than an answer. Two things decide the outcome and neither appears in a list.
The first is whether the agency will verify your tracking before it touches your bids. Cost per lead is a fiction if the conversions are not being counted, and in local accounts they very often are not.
The second is whether ads are the right spend for you at all. For a business with a weak Google Business Profile, paying to sit above the Map Pack is renting a position you could own, and the rent never stops. Fix the free asset first. That is what actually moves a profile, and the honest comparison of where the money goes is in Google Ads versus SEO for trades.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a trade spend on Google Ads in Ontario?
Enough to buy meaningful data in your category, which for most local trades is a few hundred dollars a month rather than a few thousand. The more useful question is what a booked job is worth to you, because that sets what a click can cost. Any agency that quotes a budget before asking that question is guessing.
Should I pick a local agency or a big-city one?
It depends on which problem you have. Local matters when the work is town-by-town local search, because knowing the towns is part of the job. It matters much less for paid search itself, which is managed remotely regardless of where the agency sits. Do not pay a premium for proximity on a channel that never needs it.
What is a normal management fee?
Canadian agencies commonly charge either a flat monthly fee or a percentage of ad spend, often in the 10 to 20 percent range, and ad spend is paid directly to Google rather than through the agency. Be careful with percentage-of-spend models on small budgets, where the fee can exceed the value of the management, and be careful with any arrangement where your ad spend is billed through the agency rather than to your own card.
How long before Google Ads works?
Ads produce clicks immediately and useful data in two to four weeks. Getting to a stable cost per booked job usually takes 60 to 90 days, because that is how long it takes to build a real negative keyword list from your own search terms report. Anybody promising a stable cost per lead in week one is describing something other than experience.
Can I just run them myself?
Plenty of trades do, and for a small single-town budget it is a reasonable choice. The three things that most often go wrong when they do are the same three an agency should fix on day one: tracking that is not firing, location targeting set to interest rather than presence, and ads pointing at a homepage instead of a page about the job being advertised.
