Local citation

Definition

A local citation is a mention of a business's name, address, and phone number on another website: a directory such as Yellow Pages Canada, a chamber of commerce member list, a trade association page, a news article, or a supplier's dealer locator. A citation does not need a link to count. Google reads citations to confirm the business is real and that its identity is consistent across the web.

Citations are split into structured (a directory listing with fixed fields) and unstructured (a mention inside an article or a sponsor page). Structured citations do the identity work. Unstructured ones add prominence, and when they carry a link they also act as a backlink.

Why it matters on the Georgian Bay shoreline

Canadian directories, not American lists

Most citation checklists online are written for the United States and send a Collingwood business to directories Google Canada barely reads. The ones that carry weight here are Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, YP.ca, 411.ca, Canada411, the BBB, and the local layer: the Collingwood and South Georgian Bay chambers, town business directories, the local BIAs, and the trade associations for the business's own trade.

Consistency over count

Forty clean citations beat two hundred mixed ones. Every citation carries the NAP, so every citation is a place the NAP can be wrong. A citation-building service that adds sixty directories with a tracking number adds sixty mismatches.

Example

Suppose an Owen Sound electrician has eleven citations, all correct, and sits at Map Pack position four. Adding the Canadian directories from our citation list, a chamber membership, and one supplier locator brings the total to about twenty-six consistent citations. In the citation cleanups we have measured on Georgian Bay shoreline trades, that kind of change typically moves a profile one to two Map Pack positions inside four to eight weeks. It is not the biggest lever, but it is the most reliable one.

The common mistake

Buying a bulk citation package. The packages submit to whichever directories accept automated listings, most of them irrelevant in Canada, and they rarely let the business correct or remove a listing later. Build the forty that matter by hand, once, and check them yearly.

Check three citations against each other

The free NAP checker compares the name, address, and phone from any three sources and flags the mismatches Google reads as a different business.
