Definition
The Google Map Pack is the block of three business listings, shown with a map, that Google places near the top of results for a search with local intent, such as "plumber Collingwood" or "roofer near me". Each listing is a Google Business Profile, not a website, and shows the business name, star rating, review count, category, and a call or directions button.
Google fills the three spots from its own local index using three signal groups: relevance (does the profile match the search), distance (how close the business is to the searcher or the named town), and prominence (reviews, citations, links, and how well known the business is on the web). A fourth listing, "More businesses", opens the full local finder.

Share of the click
On a phone, the Map Pack fills the whole first screen for most trade searches. The searcher reads three names, three ratings, and taps one. A business at organic position one below the pack is often the fifth thing on the screen. In the Collingwood trade categories we track, the three pack listings take most of the calls a search produces, and a business outside the pack competes for what is left.
Proximity to the searcher
The pack is drawn for the searcher's location or the town in the query, so a Collingwood roofer can hold spot one for "roofer collingwood", drop to spot four for a search made in Thornbury, and vanish for one made in Wasaga Beach. There is no single Map Pack position. There is a position per town and per neighbourhood, which is why rank tracking for the pack uses a grid of points rather than one number.
Example
Picture a homeowner in Cranberry who searches "furnace repair collingwood" on a Sunday evening. The pack shows three HVAC contractors: the two with the most recent reviews and a third that lists Cranberry in its service area. The homeowner calls the first one with a 4.8 rating and 90 reviews. The contractor at organic position two, with a better website but 14 reviews and no listing in the pack, never gets the call.
The common mistake
Treating the website as the way into the pack. The pack is a ranking of Google Business Profiles. A strong site helps prominence, but a profile with the wrong primary category, no recent reviews, or a service area that stops at the town line will sit outside the pack no matter how good the site is. Fix the profile first, then the site.
