Primary category (GBP)

Definition

The primary category is the single category an owner picks first on a Google Business Profile, such as "Plumber", "HVAC contractor", or "Roofing contractor". Google shows it under the business name in the Map Pack and weighs it more than any secondary category when it decides which searches the profile is relevant to. A profile can add up to nine secondary categories, but only one primary.

The category list is fixed by Google. An owner cannot invent "Collingwood plumber"; the choice is between Google's own labels, and the most specific label that describes the core service is the right one.

The ceiling on relevance

A wrong primary category caps rank before anything else is considered. A heating and cooling business listed as "Contractor" will not compete for "furnace repair" searches in Collingwood no matter how many reviews it earns. We have watched a contractor move from Map Pack position eight to position two in six weeks with the primary category as the only change.

Which searches the profile enters

Google maps searches to categories. "Emergency plumber" and "drain cleaning" both resolve to "Plumber", so one correct primary covers the cluster. A business that does two unrelated things, such as roofing and eavestroughs, picks the one that brings the most profitable work as primary and adds the other as secondary.

Example

Picture a Thornbury business that installs heat pumps and has "Electrician" as its primary because the owner is a licensed electrician. It ranks for electrical searches it does not want and is invisible for "heat pump installation thornbury". The fix is to switch the primary to "Heating contractor" and keep "Electrician" as secondary. In our experience a primary category change shows in the pack within a few weeks, and it is the single change we have seen move a profile the furthest.

The common mistake

Picking the broadest category to "cover everything". "Contractor" and "Home improvement" cover nothing in particular. The specific category wins the specific search, and the specific search is the one that turns into a job.
