Definition
A Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free business listing Google shows on Maps, in the Map Pack, and in the knowledge panel on the right of a desktop search. It holds the business name, address or service area, phone, hours, categories, services, photos, reviews, posts, and the Q&A that customers left before Google retired that feature. The owner manages it at business.google.com after Google verifies the business.
The profile is the unit Google ranks in local search. When a searcher types "electrician wasaga beach", Google compares profiles, not websites, to pick the three Map Pack results. The website feeds the profile with relevance and trust signals, but the profile is what appears and what gets tapped.
Why it matters on the Georgian Bay shoreline
The listing that takes the call
For a trade business on the Georgian Bay shoreline, the profile is where most first contact happens. The call button, the directions button, and the review count all live on it. A business with a good site and a thin profile loses to a business with a plain site and a complete, active profile, and we have watched that ordering hold across Collingwood, Blue Mountain, and Owen Sound.
Verification and ownership
Google verifies a profile by video, postcard, phone, or email before it goes live, and a profile can be suspended when the name, address, or category looks wrong. Editing the business name after verification is the most common way an owner sends a healthy profile back into review. The safe rule: the name on the profile is the name on the truck and the invoice, nothing added.
Example
A laundromat we took over in June 2026 had a claimed but half-empty profile: no services, six photos, hours wrong on holidays. Completing the profile and keeping it active took the profile from 11 calls a month to 26 without a website change. The full numbers are in the laundromat case study linked below.
The common mistake
Claiming the profile, filling in the basics, and never opening it again. Google reads activity: new photos, posts, replies to reviews, and updated hours. A profile that has not changed in six months reads as a business that may have closed, and it drifts down the pack while a busier competitor moves up.
