Service-area business (SAB)

Definition

A service-area business (SAB) is a Google Business Profile that hides its street address and instead lists the towns or regions it serves. Google created the type for businesses that go to the customer: plumbers, electricians, roofers, landscapers, cleaners, mobile mechanics. A storefront profile shows a pin at an address that customers visit. An SAB profile shows a service area, and the pin, if any, is the town centre.

An SAB still needs a real location behind it, because Google verifies the business at that location and uses it as the anchor for distance. The address is hidden from the public, not from Google.

Distance still counts

Setting a service area does not make Google rank the business everywhere in it. Distance from the hidden address still shapes the Map Pack, so a Collingwood-based plumber who lists Owen Sound in the service area will rarely appear in the pack for a search made in Owen Sound. The service area tells Google where the business is willing to go. It does not move the business.

Address rules and suspensions

The most common SAB suspension we see comes from a home-based business that shows its house address to look like a storefront, or from an owner who adds a second profile with a rented mailbox in the next town. Both are against Google's guidelines. One profile, at the real base, with the address hidden and the service area set, is the version that stays live.

Example

Suppose a Wasaga Beach roofer works from home. The correct setup is an SAB profile verified at the house, address hidden, service area set to Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Stayner, and Elmvale. The roofer will rank well in Wasaga Beach and the eastern edge of Collingwood, and weakly in Elmvale. A Collingwood storefront would need a real, staffed shop at a Collingwood address; a mailbox does not qualify.

The common mistake

Listing a twenty-town service area to "rank everywhere". The area is a promise to customers, not a ranking lever. Google may also trim a service area it judges unrealistic. Set the area you actually drive to, and build a town page on the website for each town you want to rank in organically.
