SEO for Painting Companies
Painting is a category where the customer buys with their eyes and decides in a season. Exterior work in Ontario has a window of roughly May to October, which means the pages have to be ranking in February. And painters carry the lowest review counts of any trade we track, which makes reviews the fastest lever available to you.

Why painting company SEO is not trades SEO
Three things. Painting is bought visually, so photographs are not decoration, they are the product and they carry real search weight through image results and Google Business Profile engagement. Painting is sharply seasonal in a way that splits the business in half: exterior work compresses into a short Ontario summer while interior work fills the winter. And the money has moved: cabinet refinishing and commercial repaints carry margins that a standard interior repaint does not.
What we keep finding in this category
These four come up in almost every painting company conversation. None of them is exotic, and that is the point.
Interior and exterior are one page, and they are two businesses
Exterior painting is a summer purchase researched in late winter, weather dependent, and priced per square foot of a building. Interior painting runs year round and is priced per room. They have different search seasons, different buyers and different objections. One "painting services" page serves neither properly.
The high-margin work has no page
Cabinet refinishing, commercial and office repaints, strata and condo common areas, deck and fence staining, and epoxy floors are the jobs worth having. They are usually a bullet list on a homepage. Cabinet refinishing in particular is a distinct search with a distinct buyer and far less competition than "interior painter".
Painters have the weakest reviews of any trade, and nobody is using that
In our Georgian Bay market index the painter category averages 32 Google reviews per business, against 90 for plumbers, 118 for pest control and 141 for auto repair. It is the softest review field of any trade we measure. A painting company running a real review process passes most of its Map Pack competition inside a year, which is not true in the other trades.
The photographs are the product and they are treated as decoration
Three phone snaps in a gallery with filenames like IMG_4471. Painting is chosen on appearance, so before-and-after sets, described and named properly, on the specific service page rather than a general gallery, do double duty: they convert the visitor and they give Google something to read.
The searches, and what they are actually worth
Our own pull from the Google keyword and SERP data on 28 August 2026. We publish the Canadian column next to the American one because it is the honest picture: this whole category of search is small in Canada, and any agency that quotes you a big number is quoting the United States without saying so.
| Search term | US / month | Canada / month | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| seo for painters | 170 | under 10 | not scored |
| painter seo | 170 | under 10 | not scored |
| painting company marketing | 170 | under 10 | 12 / 100 |
| seo for painting companies | 140 | under 10 | not scored |
| painting company seo | 140 | under 10 | not scored |
| painting contractor seo | 140 | under 10 | not scored |
Combined United States volume across this cluster: 930 searches a month. These are the searches a painting company owner runs when looking for help. They are not the searches your customers run, which are local and far larger, and which are the ones we build your site for.
What page one actually held
On 2026-08-28 page one held one large agency (Blue Corona, at position three rather than one), a painting trade association guide, two niche marketing agencies, a Reddit thread, a Sherwin-Williams training video, and a trade magazine article. Page-one pages for "seo for painters" average 1.2 referring domains. This is a beatable field, and it is the largest local prospect pool of any category we have built for.
The work, in the order we do it
Every engagement starts with the Google Business Profile, because it moves fastest, and then builds the pages the searches were already asking for.
Split interior and exterior, then build the seasons behind them
Two page families, each with its own service pages and its own publishing schedule. Exterior pages are live and indexed by February so they rank for the March and April research wave. Interior pages get pushed from October, when the exterior season closes and homeowners turn indoors.
Pages for the work with margin in it
Cabinet refinishing, commercial and office repaints, condo and strata common areas, deck and fence staining, and any specialty coating you actually do. These are lower volume and far less contested than the generic painter terms, and they bring in the jobs you would rather quote.
A review programme, because this is where the category is soft
One text at job completion, straight to your review form. Given a category average of 32, going from 15 reviews to 50 with a steady arrival rate moves you past most of your Map Pack competition. In plumbing the same effort barely registers.
Photographs treated as a ranking asset
Before-and-after sets on the specific service page, descriptive filenames and alt text, real projects in named towns, and the same images loaded to the Google Business Profile on a schedule. Profile photo activity is a live signal, not a one-time setup task.
Google Business Profile configured for both halves of the year
Primary category, secondary categories covering the specialty work, full services list, service areas for every town you quote in, and seasonal posts that change with the work. A profile that says the same thing in January and July is describing a business that does not exist.
And what about paid ads?
Painting has the clearest seasonal case for paid search on this site. Exterior work is researched in February and March and booked for a summer that runs to October, which is exactly the window where new exterior pages have not aged into position yet. Ads bridge that first season, then the pages carry it in year two.
How we run Google Ads for local service businesses →The traps, specific to painting companies
Each of these has cost somebody in this category real money. They are not generic SEO advice.
- One painting page covering interior and exterior, which serves two different seasons and two different buyers with one compromise
- Publishing exterior content in May, when the searching happened in February and March and the season is already booked
- Leaving cabinet refinishing and commercial repaints as bullet points, when they are the highest-margin searches in the category
- Photo galleries with camera-default filenames and no alt text, in the one trade where the images are the product
- Ignoring reviews because "everyone has few", which is exactly why they are the cheapest advantage available here
Where most painting companies start
Shoreline, $1,500/mo
Painting needs two page families, interior and exterior, plus the specialty pages and a page per town. Foundation runs out of room before the specialty work gets covered.

We know this category locally. The Georgian Bay market index we maintain holds 388 businesses in this category across southern Georgian Bay and the surrounding corridor, with their Google Business Profile category, review count and rating. That index is how we work out which searches are contested and which are open, before we quote anybody. It is the same method behind the Map Pack tactics guide and the published results.
Questions painting companies ask
When should I publish my exterior painting pages? +
February at the latest. Ontario exterior season runs roughly May to October, and the research happens six to twelve weeks ahead of the booking. A page published in May has no ranking history when the season starts and will miss it. Build the summer pages in winter and the winter pages in summer.
Is cabinet refinishing worth its own page? +
It is one of the best pages a painting company can build. It is a distinct search, a distinct buyer, a far less competitive term than "interior painter", and the margin is better than a standard repaint. If you do the work, build the page.
How many reviews do I need to compete? +
Fewer than in any other trade. Our regional index puts painters at an average of 32 Google reviews, the lowest of any trade we track and roughly a third of the plumbing average. Fifty genuine reviews with a steady arrival rate puts you ahead of most of the field. This is the single cheapest advantage in the category.
Do photographs actually affect ranking? +
They affect the two things that drive ranking here. Properly named and described images on the right service page give Google readable content and can surface in image results, and profile photo activity is a live engagement signal on the Google Business Profile. In a category bought on appearance, they also do the converting.
Should I chase residential or commercial? +
Both, on separate pages. Residential is higher volume with a faster decision. Commercial and strata work is lower volume, longer to close, and worth considerably more per contract, and there is far less competition for the search terms. Most painting companies we look at have no commercial page at all.
