You get your business recommended by ChatGPT by changing what the live web says about you, because that is what the model reads before it answers. Grounded AI assistants look you up in real time: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, the directories that list you, and whether your website plainly answers the questions customers ask. Fix those six inputs, which this guide walks through one by one, and AI visibility moves in weeks. There is no form to fill out at OpenAI and no way to pay for placement.
We are not guessing at this. In July 2026 we ran the Canada AI Visibility Index: 7,360 AI answers across 368 Canadian trade-city markets, asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude the five questions a real customer asks. This guide is what the winning businesses in that data had in common.
Why this is winnable right now
Three numbers from the index set the stage.
First, AI models do not “know” your business from training. Across all 7,360 answers, the three web-connected models recommended tracked local businesses 8,792 times. The one model answering from training memory alone managed 220, about 2.4% of that. Recommendations come from live lookups, which means the inputs are yours to change, this month, not on some retraining cycle you have no control over.
Second, the incumbents have not locked it up. Only 43 of the 368 markets we measured have a dominant AI favourite. Sixteen markets are wide open, with no business named more than twice in twenty answers. The AI answer in 2026 looks the way Google looked around 2010: early, unclaimed, and cheap to win compared to what it will cost in three years.
Third, the current winners are not who you would expect. In 87% of markets, the business AI recommends most is not the Google review leader. Eden Landscaping wins Regina’s landscaping answers with eight reviews in a market whose review leader holds 246. Closer to home, Muzzell Plumbing takes 15 of Owen Sound’s 20 plumbing answers with 45 reviews against a review leader holding 171. If they can win with those numbers, the barrier is not size.
What the AI actually does when someone asks
When someone in Collingwood types “who’s the best plumber near me” into ChatGPT, the model with browsing turned on runs a web search, reads a handful of results, and synthesizes an answer with names in it. Perplexity does the same and shows its sources. Gemini leans on Google’s own index and your Business Profile.
That reading list is short and predictable: Google Maps results and reviews, directories like HomeStars, BBB and Yelp, local news mentions, and the business websites themselves. Your job is to be legible and consistent everywhere on that list. Here are the six inputs, in the order we fix them for clients.
The six inputs, in order
1. A complete Google Business Profile with the right categories
Gemini reads your profile directly, and every model sees the Maps results. A profile with the wrong primary category, no services listed, and three photos gives the model nothing to work with. Get the category selection right for your trade, fill every field, and keep hours accurate. This is the same work that wins the Map Pack, which is why businesses that do local SEO properly tend to inherit AI visibility as a side effect.
2. A website that answers the five buyer questions in plain language
Our index asked the questions real buyers ask: who is the best, who handles this emergency, who is reliable, who do reviews trust, who do locals use. The businesses that win are the ones whose websites answer those questions in plain sentences a model can quote. “We answer emergency calls in Thornbury and Meaford within two hours, including weekends” is citable. A homepage that says “Quality. Integrity. Service.” is not. Write a page per service, name your towns, state your prices or at least your ranges, and put a real FAQ on the page.
3. Directory and citation coverage
Perplexity and ChatGPT lean hard on third-party sources because they are trained to distrust self-description. If HomeStars, BBB, Yelp and the local directories have never heard of you, the model has one source (you) instead of six. Work through a proper citation list for your area and make sure the name, address and phone match your Google profile exactly everywhere they appear.
4. Reviews, treated as a citation trail rather than a scoreboard
Review count alone does not decide the AI answer; 40% of review leaders in our data were never mentioned at all. But reviews are still the richest text describing what you actually do, and models quote from them. Recent reviews that mention the service and the town (“replaced our furnace in Wasaga Beach in one day”) are exactly the sentences a model lifts into an answer. A systematic review ask after every job now pays twice: once in the Map Pack, once as AI source material.
5. Structured data on the site
Schema markup is machine-readable labelling: this is a plumber, serving these towns, open these hours, with these reviews. It costs nothing, most Georgian Bay trades sites have none, and it makes every other input easier for a machine to parse. The schema guide for service businesses covers LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ markup with examples you can copy.
6. Third-party mentions and local press
The strongest AI favourites in our national data have one thing the invisible businesses lack: other websites talking about them. A story in the local paper, a mention on a supplier’s site, a chamber of commerce listing, a sponsorship page. One good mention on a site the models already trust outweighs ten pages of self-praise on your own.
How fast each input moves
| Input | What the model does with it | Time to move |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Read directly by Gemini, seen by all via Maps | Days |
| Plain-language site answers | Quoted in answers, cited by Perplexity | 1 to 3 weeks |
| Directory citations | Corroborates you exist and are legitimate | 2 to 6 weeks |
| Review velocity | Source text for “who do reviews trust” | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Schema markup | Makes the site parseable | 1 to 3 weeks |
| Press and mentions | Trusted third-party evidence | 1 to 3 months |
You can now watch part of this in Google’s own numbers: Search Console’s AI impressions report shows which of your pages turned up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, though it still withholds clicks and queries.
The timescales are from watching our own properties and client sites, not a lab. Three days after we published structured local content on this site, Perplexity started citing it in answers. The training-memory model never moved, which is exactly the point: you are not waiting for an AI company to update anything.
What this looks like on Georgian Bay
In our home markets the pattern from the national data repeats. Clearview Plumbing takes more than half of Collingwood’s plumbing answers. Weldon Roofing leads the Collingwood roofing conversation. Thornbury Auto owns auto repair answers in the Blue Mountains. None of them is the review leader in their market. Each of them is easy for a machine to read: consistent listings, a site that says what they do and where, and reviews that mention the work.
The review leaders they beat are not doing anything wrong. They won the competition that mattered for the last decade. This is a new competition with overlapping inputs, and right now, in almost every market from Wasaga Beach to Owen Sound, nobody is deliberately competing in it.
Find out where you stand before you spend anything
One honest caveat: nobody outside these AI companies can guarantee a specific answer, and API results approximate rather than replicate the consumer apps. What you can do is measure. Our free AI visibility check asks the same five buyer questions to the same four models about your business and shows you exactly which answers you appear in and who is being recommended instead. If you are already there, you will know what to protect. If you are invisible, you now have the six-item list above, or a free audit if you would rather we prioritize it for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I train ChatGPT to recommend my business? No. There is no training you can do, no submission form, and no advertising product that buys placement in organic AI answers. Web-connected models look your market up at answer time. The only lever you control is what that lookup finds: your Google profile, directories, reviews, and website. That is also good news, because those inputs move in weeks.
How do I get my business ranked on ChatGPT? There is no ranking to submit to. Make your business the easiest one in your market for a machine to read: complete Google Business Profile, consistent citations on HomeStars, BBB and Yelp, a website that answers buyer questions in plain sentences with your towns named, schema markup, and steady reviews that describe the work. In our 368-market study, businesses with those inputs beat review leaders holding two to thirty times their review count.
How long does it take to show up in AI recommendations? Weeks, not years, because grounded models read the live web on every answer. We saw Perplexity cite newly published structured content within three days. Profile and website fixes typically show up inside a month; citation and review work takes one to two months to feed through. Press mentions are slowest but most durable.
Do Google reviews matter for AI recommendations? Yes, but not the way most owners assume. In 40% of the markets we measured, the business with the most Google reviews was never mentioned by a single AI assistant, so count alone buys nothing. What matters is recent review text describing your services and towns, which the models quote as evidence. Volume helps; being quotable helps more.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business? Ask it the way a customer would (“who’s the best electrician in Meaford?”) and see who comes up, then do the same in Perplexity and Gemini. For a structured version, our free AI visibility check runs the five standard buyer questions across four models and scores your business against your market, using the same method as the national index.
